Many of us associate the Kritis of Svamigal with anguish, sorrow, and seeking mercy. Not many know he was much romantic in a few of his compositions.
“Like an orphaned girl, I am waiting here to get united with you”, “When will you show your presence and kiss me?”, “When can I embrace you?”. These are not some random lines extracted from poems written by a contemporary romantic poet. These are indeed taken from Tyagaraja keertanas.
As mentioned several times, we can understand composition or a poem in its right sense, only if we travel with the poet. This is applicable to all, starting from Andaal to Svamigal.
These are expressions expressed by a soul that has realized the omnipresent Parabrahmam, which has found the ‘perfect’ and pining to get united with it. Needless to say, this can be expressed only by a soul that has identified itself with the Paravastu. Certainly, it is not surprising to see such expressions in the compositions of Svamigal. It will be a surprise only if people like us understand the real meaning of these expressions.
This kriti is composed in the ragam Hindolavasanta, wherein Svamigal expresses his wish of being kissed by Sri Ramachandra. This raga has rishabha and my work of proving this gets simplified as ‘SuRa’ placed all the evidence before us. This unheard version having rishabam is much attractive and is to be experienced.

ஸ்வாமிகள் க்ருதிகள் என்றாலே ஒரே கெஞ்சல், கதறல் அல்லது அழுகை என்கிற எண்ணம் பலருக்கும் உண்டு. ஆனால் அவர் ஷ்ருங்காரம் த்வனிக்க சில உருப்படிகள் பார்த்திருக்கிறார் என்று பலருக்கு தெரிந்திருக்காது.
என்று உன்னை கட்டிப்பிடித்து கொள்வேன் ? எப்பொழுது என் எதிரில் வந்து முத்தம் தருவாய் ? ஒரு பெண்ணை போன்று நான் உனது முகத்தை நினைத்து உருகுகிறேன், என்னை சேர வரலாகாதா ? இவையெல்லாம் ஏதோ ஒரு காதல் கவிதையில் வரும் வரிகள் அல்ல. ஸ்வாமிகளின் கீர்தனைகள்.
பல முறை சொன்னாற் போல் ஸ்வாமிகளின் எண்ண ஓட்டத்தினோடு சென்றால் தான் அவரின் உள்ளத்தை புரிந்து கொள்ள முடியும். இது ஸ்வாமிகளுக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, இவரைப்போல் ஷ்ருங்கார கவி எழுதியுள்ள, ஆண்டாள் போன்ற எல்லா கவிகளுக்கும் பொருந்தும்.
ஒரு நிலைக்கண்ணாடி முன் நின்று கோண்டு நாம் நம்மையே அழகு பார்திருப்போம். அடடா! கொள்ளை அழகு, த்ருஷ்டி சுத்தி போடணும் என்று அங்கலாய்த்திருப்போம். பூரணமில்லாத ஒன்றைப்பார்த்தே இப்படி தோன்றுமானால், பரிபூரண வஸ்து ஒன்றை பல முறை திகட்ட திகட்ட பார்த்த பிறகு, அது ஆன்மாவினூடேயே ஊறின பிறகு, அதன் ப்ரதிபலிப்பு தான் அதையே பார்க்கிறது என்று உணர்ந்த பிரகு, இந்த எண்ணம் வராமல் இருந்தால் ஆச்சர்யம் இல்லை, ஒன்றும் தெரியாத நம்மைப்போன்றவர்களுக்கு இது புரிந்தால் தான் ஆச்சர்யம் !
இன்று நாம் பார்க்கவிருப்பது ராமனை ஸ்வாமிகள் முத்தமிட கூப்பிட்ட க்ருதி. ஹிந்தோள வசந்த என்னும் ராகத்தில் அமைந்தது. இதற்கு ரிஷப ஸ்வரம் உண்டு என்று சங்கீத தேவன் சொல்லி விட்டதால், அதற்கான் ஆதாரத்தை நான் கொடுக்கும் அவசியம் இல்லாமல் போய் விட்டது. ரிஷப ஸ்வரம் இருக்கும், வெளியே கேக்க முடியாத பாடத்திற்கு தனி கவர்ச்சி உண்டு.
